Malibu Coast, Spring

Green hills run straight down to the Pacific. Granville Redmond painted Malibu Coast, Spring with those slopes crowding the shore, wildflowers scattered gold and violet across the grassland under a wide, pale sky. Rolling coastal bluffs carry the color here. Poppies and lupine break up the green in small touches of orange and blue, their pigment laid thin and loose, while the water below sits flat and silvery, edged with foam where the surf meets sand. Light comes low, the way it does in late afternoon along that stretch of California shore. A landscape like this belongs in a sunroom, a hallway with a long sightline, or above a reading chair that faces the window.
