Magnolia

Magnolia blossoms open wide across the picture, broad cream petals loaded with oil paint until the surface rises in low ridges, a still life by Cuno Amiet at his most tactile. Each throat flushes rose and cools toward green in the shadows, while a dark branch crosses behind the blooms, its bark given in a few strokes of umber. Deep sap green sets them off and lets the pale petals carry the frame alone. A sunroom, a reading nook, an entryway with linen and oak: the quiet floral subject belongs where morning light moves slowly through the day.
