Madame LR (Portrait de Mme LR)

Brows arched in two clean crescents, a pale oval face looks straight out at the viewer. Madame LR (Portrait de Mme LR) shows Brâncuși, better known for carved marble and polished bronze, working in flat color and line. All of it holds to a single shallow plane. Rose warms each cheek, dark almond eyes sit wide apart, and smooth hair falls in one solid mass to a high collar. Small blossoms scatter over the dress, a pattern close to Romanian embroidery, against a muted olive ground. In an entryway or reading room, that level gaze meets every arrival, folk simplicity at ease beside modern furniture and bare plaster.
