Madame Arthur Fontaine

A woman in a dark dress sits composed against patterned wallpaper, her hands folded in her lap, her face rendered with quiet attention. Vuillard painted her as part of the room itself, merging figure and interior into one fabric of color. Look closely and the wallpaper blooms into loose floral strokes behind her, mauve and green pressed close against the sitter, while her dress absorbs the surrounding tones until she nearly dissolves into the decoration. The brushwork is short and loaded, pigment laid in thick little touches that give the whole surface a woven texture. A reading nook or small sitting room suits this interior portrait best, somewhere the patterning can be studied at leisure.
