Low Tide Honfleur

Low tide bares the mudflats outside Honfleur, and Guy Rose follows a lone figure walking the wet sand beneath moored hulls. This Normandy harbor view belongs to the American Impressionist body of work he painted in France. Broken brushwork carries the scene. Silvered sky light drops onto brown-green shallows, while boat hulls stand heeled over on their keels, masts crossing against the pale harbor haze. Reflections waver in shallow water pools left by the retreating sea, and distant gabled houses hold the far quay in soft grey and ochre notes. A quiet harbor scene of this calm suits a study or reading nook, bringing cool coastal light into a small, personal space.
