Loup Scar, Wharfedale

Limestone scar and river meet in Wharfedale, the Yorkshire valley that Richard Jack set down as Loup Scar. Grey rock leans over running water; trees hold the slope between. The paint moves in short, loaded strokes, slate and pearl grey across the rock face, moss green at the water margin, ochre bracken along the bank. Light falls flat and silvery, and the river carries pale reflections down toward the shallows. A study with north light suits it, or an entryway wanting the cool of Dales air, stone and river held quietly against plain plaster.
