Long Gallery at Sutton Place, near Guildford

Sunlight falls down the length of a long Tudor gallery at Sutton Place, the mullioned windows marching away in strict rhythm. Churchill paints the corridor as a study in ordered perspective, stone and glass and quiet symmetry. Shadowed rafters cross a pale ceiling while the flagged floor catches low gold light from the courtyard side. Warm ochre and honey tones wash the walls, and a doorway at the far end breaks the repetition with a small dark square. The eye travels the whole depth of the room in one sweep. It suits a hallway, library, or dining room where architecture and calm discipline belong.
