Lombardian Landscape

Poplars stand in disciplined rows above flooded fields, their reflections stitched into still water under a wide Lombardian sky. Achille Beltrame knew this countryside and painted it with the assurance of an illustrator. Ochre fields alternate with green paddies, cut by irrigation channels that flash silver where light catches them. A terracotta farmhouse holds the middle distance while the Alps dissolve into blue haze. Flat planes of color and clean brushwork carry the clarity of a magazine cover, the medium that made him famous. Hung in a dining room or study, the cool greens and silvered water settle quietly, a breath of the Po plain in an everyday interior.
