Little Pond

A quiet stretch of still water sits at the center of this painting by Ivan Trush, the Ukrainian landscapist who gave Galician scenery its most patient observer. Reeds lean at the bank, their reflections breaking the mirrored surface into thin vertical strokes of green and grey. The palette runs through moss green, silt brown, and a pale sky washed thin at the horizon. Trush builds the water with short, layered brushstrokes, letting darker tones pool at the near edge while soft light gathers where the bank curves away. Trees crowd the far shore as loose, dark masses, their silhouettes doubled in the pond below. A calm, grounded subject for a study or reading room, where the low horizon and muted greens slow the eye and settle the light.
