Lions Mouth

Two rough clay lions crouch on a shallow plinth, their jaws pulled wide in a silent roar. Molded ridges shadow the fur, and the hollow mouths gape dark, catching whatever light falls across the shelf. Paws press forward, weight sunk into the haunches. The surface carries the grain of pressed earth: ochre slips over grey clay, edges worn smooth where hands once lifted the mold. Firing has darkened one flank to burnt sienna while the other holds a paler tan, so the pair reads uneven, handmade, alive. Crosshatched tool marks still cross the chest. Set it where a lamp rakes across the relief, a study shelf or entryway console, and the carved shadows do the rest.
