Lilacs in Vase gathers an armful of late spring into a clear glass jar, cut stems fanning outward as Valentin Serov paints each purple panicle with quick, wet strokes that seem to tremble. The Russian master loads each blossom head with thick mauve and lavender dabs while the ground behind stays thin and washed pale. Leaves curl where they slip under water, bent by refraction, and the whole still life breathes cool northern air. It belongs where morning light falls: a bedroom, a vanity corner, a reading nook, anywhere the fresh sweetness of a May garden would do good work.
