Lilacs in Braids

Lilac panicles plaited stem over stem spill across a pale tablecloth in Lilacs in Braids, a still life where Pyotr Konchalovsky lets one flower claim the entire composition. Each floret is built from a single dab of loaded brush, white blushed mauve on the shadow side, piled so thick the blossom cones read like sculpted plaster. Braided stems arc below in bottle green, leaves laid flat against a deep, quiet ground.
