Lilacs in a Basket

A woven basket holds a heap of lilac in Lilacs in a Basket, blossom clusters heaped so high they spill over the wicker rim. Paint in thick, loaded strokes builds each panicle: lavender and heliotrope touched with white at the petal edges, violet sinking into shadow deep between the clusters. Serrated leaves in cool sap green break the purple mass, and the wicker weave reads in quick ochre flicks. Kitchens, breakfast nooks, and sunroom tables suit it, anywhere morning light can pick out the impasto; a study or hallway gains just as much from all that May abundance.
