Lilac

Snowballs of white and deep violet blossom fill the view, petal pressed to petal, in a still life Pyotr Konchalovsky titled plainly: Lilac. Oil paint sits heavy on the surface, each floret a single loaded dab of lavender, mauve or cream. Deep green leaves wedge between the clusters, and the whole bouquet leans with real heft. Up close the impasto goes almost sculptural. A sunroom or dining room suits it best, somewhere with strong daylight, where all that cool green and sugared purple can breathe against plain plaster.
