Lilac

Dense purple clusters of lilac spill past the rim of a low bowl, every floret loaded with paint. Pyotr Konchalovsky titled the picture for its subject and nothing more. Paint stands in ridges you could trace with a fingertip: violet and mauve florets packed shoulder to shoulder, a few white sprays cooling the mass, serrated leaves in deep green cutting through the sweetness. Behind it all, one flat field of grey keeps every petal forward. A dining room or entryway takes the burst of late-spring garden gladly; from across the space the massed bloom reads almost like scent.
