Lilac

Heavy trusses of lilac pile up edge to edge, white and purple bloom packed so densely the leaves barely show. Pyotr Konchalovsky painted this Russian garden subject again and again, never more generously than here. Paint sits thick. Each petal is a loaded dab of white, mauve or near-black violet, the hollows between clusters sliding into blue shadow. Blunt, almost sculptural brushwork builds every panicle from separate touches, while dark leaves anchor the mass against a plain ground. In a hallway or above a sideboard, it carries late-spring abundance into the room, a bouquet that keeps its perfume long after May has passed.
