Lilac

Lilac panicles crowd the picture until blossom touches blossom, violet clusters stacked so thick the vase beneath barely shows. Pyotr Konchalovsky built each floret in loaded strokes of paint. Deep purple heads shade into lavender and near-white at the tips, while four-petaled florets catch the light along every rounded edge. Cool green leaves wedge between the stems, and the dark ground behind the bouquet turns the palest blooms almost luminous. Thick impasto ridges give each cluster real weight. A bedroom or morning-lit hallway suits it well; the scent seems almost present, cool and heavy, the way these flowers behave in a May room.
