Lilac in the Wicker Chair

Lilac in the Wicker Chair piles mauve panicles over woven canework. Pyotr Konchalovsky chased the flower each spring with an appetite few Russian painters matched. Clusters shift from pale heliotrope to bruised violet. Every floret is loaded on with impasto that stands off the surface, and leaves shaped like small hearts cool the mass in sap green. The honey tan weave beneath stays almost calligraphic. A sunroom, a stair landing, a reading nook by a north window: anywhere morning light rakes across, the heavy paint throws small shadows of its own.
