Light Night, Castle of Prince Judas Iscariot

A fortress rises against a night sky flooded with pale light, the subject of Light Night by Nicholas Roerich. Cold stone walls climb a dark ridge while the heavens above burn with silver and blue. Roerich builds the scene in layered tempera tones: deep cobalt shadow across the ramparts, a wash of luminous turquoise where moonlight breaks the clouds, and the castle towers reduced to simple, massive geometry.
