Leunkin Bay, June

Cold June light breaks across Leunkin Bay, water chopped into slabs of teal and slate by a fast, loaded brush. Robert Henri sets the headland low and lets the sea carry the picture. Oil paint rides in thick ridges along the wave crests, each stroke standing off the surface, then thins to a dry scrub where the far shore dissolves into haze. Pale yellow sky overhead. Foam flicked in with a few hard turns of the wrist. Hang it where daylight moves, a stair landing or an entryway with plain white walls, and the greens go deeper as the afternoon turns.
