Les Oliviers À Sanary

Olive trees dominate the canvas, their silvered crowns twisting over terraced ground at Sanary. Henri Manguin paints them heavy with Mediterranean light, trunks pale against deep Provençal green. The foliage breaks into short, loaded brushstrokes of sage and viridian, each leaf catching sun at a different angle. Trunks carry the cool grey of old bark, while the ground between them burns ochre and warm umber where the soil dries. Beyond the grove, a sliver of coastal blue holds the horizon, the Fauvist color doing all the compositional work. Suited to a sunlit breakfast room or a covered terrace corner, where the greens can breathe against whitewashed walls.
