Les lys et les vièrges folles

Lilies crowd the top of the composition, drawn with thin nervous strokes, while the foolish virgins tilt below in white robes that swing against the dark ground. Louis Soutter renders Les lys et les vièrges folles in ink line, the paper left bare between figures so the scene hums with tension. Black contour does all the work here: hands raised, lamps drooping, petals splayed like open fingers. Faces are reduced to dashes and dots, yet each virgin reads as a person caught mid hesitation. It suits a dim hallway or a study wall where something restless belongs.
