About this work

Leningrad. View from Trinity Bridge

The Neva spreads wide and pale beneath a silvery sky, seen from the granite parapet of Trinity Bridge. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva names the city plainly: Leningrad. Graded grey ink turns the water to burnished pewter. Across the river the spire of the Peter and Paul Fortress lifts a bright needle above low rooftops, while barges lie moored against the embankment wall. Woodcut grain shows in every tonal step of the sky. A study or entryway in soft neutral shades suits it, placed above a console table or beside shelves of books on Russian cities.
