Leningrad. Fontanka and the Summer Garden in Frost

Frost on the Fontanka. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva drew Leningrad as a city held in white air, the Summer Garden bare behind its railings and the canal running cold between granite banks. Her woodcut line does all the work here, cutting pale branches and ironwork out of an almost blank sheet. Bare trees cross in fine black strokes above the water, their trunks whitened where frost catches them. The garden fence reads as a rhythm of uprights, each one tipped with rime. Distant domes and rooftops dissolve into the untouched paper, so the sky and the frozen river seem to share one surface. Everything is grey, white, and a single cold ink. A north-facing hallway or a study with pale wood shelves suits this winter city view, where its quiet tonality settles the wall without asking for attention.
