The Church of St. Simeon and Anna raises its needle spire over the Fontanka embankment, the focal point of Leningrad. Bridge of Belinsky, a city view by Pyotr Konchalovsky. Grey river water carries the reflection of the bridge span, iron railings drawn in quick dark strokes. Muted ochre facades recede along the quay while a cold northern sky presses down; the oil paint sits thick and loose, every cornice and wet cobble catching damp light. A study or hallway in brick, leather and dark wood suits the slate and umber palette; the scene reads like a window onto an older Petersburg morning.
