Leghorn Coast

Fishing boats rest on pale sand along the Leghorn coast, hulls tilted as the tide withdraws. Raffaello Gambogi sets his scene at the edge of the Tyrrhenian Sea, where the shoreline stretches flat and wide toward a hazy horizon. The water carries green and slate-blue passages, brushed wet so the colors bleed into one another. Low white buildings sit behind the dunes, their facades warmed by afternoon sun, while figures near the boats give the beach its human scale. Broad, confident strokes of oil describe wet sand reflecting the sky. A coastal study like this settles naturally into a sunroom or seaside reading room, where the salt air of the Tuscan shore feels close at hand.
