Le Rayon

A single shaft of light cuts across a domestic interior, falling across wallpaper, a mirror, and a figure caught mid-turn. Le Rayon belongs to Felix Vallotton and to the Nabis circle, where interiors became stages of pattern and withheld emotion. The beam does the compositional work: a wedge of pale gold laid diagonally over flat planes of muted rose, olive, and deep shadow. Vallotton flattens the room into interlocking shapes, outlines firm as woodcut contours, the figure reduced to silhouette and highlight. Nothing is soft; everything is deliberate. It suits a hallway or reading nook where light itself changes through the day, a quiet interior for rooms that favor mood over noise.
