Blossom spills across the branches in Le mois de mai, a springtime scene by Jacques Villon. Light settles over the scene like the first mild week of the month itself. Look closely and the structure reveals the hand of a Cubist draftsman. Foliage breaks into faceted planes of green and ochre, trunks tilt at deliberate angles, and crisp crosshatching holds the composition together like the wire of a trellis.
