Le dieu bleu Set Design

A god of lapis and indigo towers over the stage in Le dieu bleu, the set design Leon Bakst painted for the Ballets Russes. His angular limbs bend like temple carvings. Cobalt floods the backdrop, broken by lotus columns and a floor the color of hot sand. The deity wears jeweled bands and a pleated ceremonial skirt, each fold picked out in gold against that saturated blue. Every line has the deliberate stiffness of Egyptian relief, filtered through Bakst theatrical exaggeration. This belongs where drama collects: a music room, a hallway with low lamplight, a study shelf of dance histories.
