Laytons Lake, Algoma

Deep northern water fills the frame in Laytons Lake, Algoma by J. E. H. MacDonald, a Canadian Group of Seven view of the Algoma wilderness. Heavy brushwork loads the shoreline with ochre rock and burnt umber conifers, their reflections breaking into short strokes of slate blue and green across the lake surface. Sky presses close in churned whites and greys, the whole surface built up in thick oil impasto that gives the paint a sculpted, hand-worked texture. MacDonald found his subject in the raw granite and spruce country north of Lake Superior, and the weight of that landscape reads in every passage. Suited to a study, library wall, or cottage reading room.
