Laundry on the Seine at Herblay

White laundry spreads across the riverbank at Herblay, sheets and shirtspegged along lines that catch the light against the moving water. Gustave Loiseau builds the scene in quick, flickering strokes, his post impressionist touch breaking the Seine into ribbons of grey, violet and cold green. On the bank, washwomen bend at their tubs while pale linen dominates the foreground, bright against darker trees behind.
