Lantern

A paper lantern hangs low in the frame, its glow the only true light source. Józef Mehoffer titled the work simply Lantern, and everything in it bends toward that small warm center. The shade glows amber at its crown, deepening to rust and burnt orange where the light thins at the rim. A dark hand reaches in from the edge, fingers curling around the handle, and the background dissolves into charcoal and deep umber so the flame reads twice as bright. The brushwork stays loose and wet, pigment pooling where the paper curves. It suits a hallway at dusk or a reading nook with a low chair, anywhere the day winds down early and a single point of light carries the room.
