Landscape with Waterfall and Bridge

Water falls in a single pale column, caught mid-descent between dark rock walls. Bogaevsky built his Crimean landscapes on exactly this kind of theatrical geology, and Landscape with waterfall and bridge is one of his most quietly dramatic arrangements. The cascade splits around a moss-dark ledge and drops into a churning pool, while a slender arched bridge crosses high above on slender masonry piers. Pale grey stone, cold green water, a haze of spray where the current breaks. The painterly handling is loose in the water and tight in the architecture, a contrast that gives the whole scene its tension. Strong in a study or stairwell, anywhere the eye wants a destination to climb toward.
