Landscape with Violet Irises

Violet irises lean into the frame from below, their blooms rendered in thick, unblended strokes of purple and blue. The title names the subject plainly, and Louis Valtat answers with color that behaves almost like pigment squeezed straight from the tube. Behind the flowers the ground opens into a sunlit field: ochre earth, scrubby green vegetation, tree shapes pushed to the upper edge in dark, rounded masses. The brushwork stays loose and loaded throughout, Fauvist in spirit, with outlines drawn in deep blue rather than black and shadows built from violet instead of grey. Sky and soil meet without fuss. A reading nook or sunroom would suit it, anywhere with good daylight for the purples to sing.
