Landscape with Trees

Trees stand in ranks across a Cimmerian plain, their crowns layered against a sky that Bogaevsky has pushed toward violet and steel. This Landscape with Trees turns a simple subject into something mineral and strange, the way Crimea looks at dusk when the rocks start to think. The foliage reads almost like eroded stone, each canopy built from short, chiseled strokes of moss green and grey umber. Trunks lean at slight angles, as if the wind off the Yaila ridge had shaped them over centuries. Behind them the hills dissolve into pale haze, a single band of cold light marking the horizon. It belongs in a quiet study or a reading nook, somewhere the eye can rest on that horizon line and wander.
