Landscape with the Moon, Bolshaya Sadovaya

A cold moon rides high over Bolshaya Sadovaya in the nocturne Pyotr Konchalovsky titled Landscape with the Moon. Moscow sleeps; a few windows refuse to. Lead-blue sky fills most of the composition, brushed in broad impasto strokes that catch real ridges of oil paint. A few window squares burn amber against dark facades, bare branches cross their glow, and the roadway settles into cold violet shadow. Made for rooms where evenings slow: a study under a low lamp, a dim hallway, or a bedroom that faces a city of its own.
