Landscape with Stronghold

A fortified rise holds the middle of the picture, stone ramparts drawn in quick grey strokes while olive-green scrub clings to the slope beneath. Landscape with Stronghead sets Stefan Popescu at his most structural, the mass of the fortress weighed against open sky. Underfoot the ground goes chalky and pale, painted in dry washes of bone white and muted umber that let the brush drag and skip across the surface. Thin shadows pool at the base of the walls, and a low wall of cypress or dark shrub cuts across the foreground like a drawn line. Popescu builds depth here through tone rather than detail, each plane of hill and battlement separated by temperature alone. It suits a study or a hallway with good daylight, where the quiet greys and greens can carry the wall without shouting.
