Landscape with Poplars

A line of poplars climbs a gentle slope, their trunks dark against pale sky. Gustave Loiseau built the scene in small, deliberate strokes of green and ochre, the kind of mark-making that made him a fixture of French Post-Impressionism. Look closely and the meadow breaks into short dashes of moss and olive, each one angled with the light. Above, cloud shadow drifts across the hillside in strokes of grey and violet, thinning to cream at the horizon. The poplars themselves stand tall and slender, leaves flickering where the brush turned quick. This quiet corner of the French countryside suits a hallway, a reading nook, or any room that wants a window onto open air.
