Landscape with lake

A still sheet of water holds the center of this painting, its surface catching the last light of day. Konstantin Bogaevsky builds his Landscape with lake around that quiet expanse, letting everything else fall away from it. Bogaevsky paints in oil with the patience of a surveyor, laying in low hills along the far shore in muted violet and olive, their edges softened into haze. The lake itself carries reflections in slate blue and cold silver, broken here and there by narrow bands of reed and pale stone along the banks. The sky above stays spare, a thin wash of grey over the ridgeline, so the water does all the talking. Set it in a quiet study or a dim hallway where its cool tones read at their best.
