Landscape with Lake and Tree on the Shore

A lone tree holds the shoreline, roots gripping the bank above a still lake. In this Nicholas Roerich landscape the water takes over half the composition, quiet and unhurried. Cool greens and slate blues wash across the surface, laid in broad, tempera-like planes typical of his hand. The tree stands dark against the reflected sky, its crown catching pale light. Barely a ripple disturbs the mirror below. Distance dissolves into soft horizon haze at the far edge.
