Landscape with Freight Train

Dark wagons crawl along the horizon of Landscape with freight train, an unusually industrial subject from Pierre Bonnard, the French Nabi better known for sunlit interiors and dinner tables. Oil paint sits in thick, dappled strokes. Chartreuse foliage presses in from one side, mauve shadow pools beneath the trees, and the line of cars reads as a low dark band trailing pale steam across a sulfur yellow sky. Color does the drawing throughout; the locomotive nearly dissolves into shimmering air. A study, hallway, or reading nook suits its quiet scale; the greens and violets sit comfortably beside dark wood, linen, and shelves of well worn books.
