Landscape with Cattle

Cattle graze at the edge of a field, heads lowered into the grass, under a sky that takes up most of the composition. Talmage worked the scene in oil, loading the foreground with short, wet strokes of umber and olive. The herd stands along a shallow rise, the animals rendered in warm chestnut and cream against grass gone straw-yellow at midday. Above them, clouds are dragged across the canvas in thick white and grey, their edges soft where the brush lost its pressure. A fence line and a few dark trees anchor the horizon low, giving the sky room to move. Suited to a study, a hallway, or any room that wants a quiet pastoral pause.
