Slender white trunks lean across a low moor horizon, chalky bark scored with dark horizontal slashes. Landscape with birch trees by Paula Modersohn-Becker keeps the flat country bare of figures. Rust, ochre and sage foliage flicker behind the stems, laid on in broad loaded strokes of oil paint, brushwork left visible. The sky holds a muted pearl grey, so the pale trunks carry all the light.
