A broad river runs through the heart of this Rylov canvas, its surface catching pale sky between low wooded banks. Landscape with a River belongs to the Russian school of plein air painting at its most open and generous. Look at how the water is built: long horizontal strokes of silver green laid over darker undertones, so the current seems to slide rather than sit.
