A broad river runs through the heart of this Rylov canvas, its surface catching pale sky between low wooded banks. Landscape with a River belongs to the Russian school of plein air painting at its most open and generous. Look at how the water is built: long horizontal strokes of silver green laid over darker undertones, so the current seems to slide rather than sit. The banks carry summer weight, grasses in ochre and moss, trees massed in deep viridian against a sky washed in soft cobalt and white.
