Landscape with a River

A river threads through a Norwegian valley, the water rendered in pale, unbroken tones between dark slopes of spruce and rock. This is Landscape with a River, traced from the route between Bergen and Christiania by Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva. Her woodcut line does the heavy lifting here. The hillsides are built from dense parallel strokes, hatched tighter where shadow pools in the ravine, loosening to bare paper on sunlit water. Farmland and scattered buildings sit small against the mass of terrain, and the current widens calmly toward the lower edge, carrying the eye out of the frame. A Nordic landscape of this restraint suits a study or reading nook, especially beside cool greys, birch woods, and plain linen.
