Landscape

Open country stretches toward a low horizon in this Scottish Colourist landscape by Samuel Peploe. The scene is built from broad, confident planes of oil colour rather than fine detail. Grass greens sit beside blocks of pale sky blue, with ochre and soft violet breaking up the middle distance. Brushwork is visible everywhere, laid on thickly and left unblended so each patch of tone keeps its own edge. Distant hills compress into two or three flat bands of colour, a method Peploe pushed further than most of his Edinburgh circle. Suits a study or a stairwell where the open horizon can breathe.
