Versailles spreads out under a heavy sky in this landscape by Fujishima Takeji, the Japanese painter who absorbed French impressionism during his years in Europe. Long gravel avenues, clipped parterres, and ranks of trees recede toward the palace silhouette in the distance. Soft greens and silvery greys carry the composition, laid down in loose, wet strokes that let the overcast light do the work. A lone figure walks the central path, small against the formal geometry of the gardens. Water in a distant basin catches the palest reflection. A quiet, measured presence for a study or reading room, where its muted palette rewards long looking rather than loud display.
