Landscape

Valley floors open toward far heights in this Nicholas Roerich landscape, the composition built in broad planes of tempera color that read almost like enamel laid flat. Nothing fussy, nothing small: earth, slope, sky. Look closely and the structure shows itself. Terracotta and ochre fields sit against deep cobalt, edges pressed hard and clean, the kind of layered planes Roerich used across his mountain work. Light pools where pale pigment thins near a distant ridge, and the whole surface carries a matte, chalky grain. A study, hallway, or reading room gains real stillness from imagery this restrained. It suits quiet interiors where one strong horizon does the talking.
