Landscape near the River Aare

The Aare bends wide and slow through the foreground, its water carrying green reflections from the banks above. This Swiss landscape by Cuno Amiet centers on that quiet river curve. Amiet paints the water in layered strokes of jade, slate, and pale gold, the surface broken by ripples of impasto that catch light unevenly. Meadow grass runs thick along the near bank, and the far shore dissolves into soft blocks of violet and ochre under a wide sky. A landscape of this stillness belongs in a reading room or a quiet hallway, somewhere the eye can rest on open water.
